The Depot MuseumThe Depot Museum.  The Avon Park Historical Society does more than collect, preserve and showcase the history of our area. We take an active role serving as a resource for the community. Our research room in the museum, our Sunday programs, the dining car operation, our upcoming celebration of the pioneers of Avon Park, our about-to-be-released historical video of the early days of Avon Park, all attest to our efforts to serve our community.

Open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We are also open the first Saturday of each month, selling beverages, snacks and desserts.

Highlands Hammock

Highlands Hammock State Park is a 9,000-acre (3,640 ha) park west of Sebring. The park opened in 193 and became one of the four original Florida State Parks when the state park system was created in 1935.

The park includes nine trails that can be accessed from a scenic three-mile (5 km) loop drive. The park includes an eleven-mile (18 km) trail can be traversed by bicyclists, horseback riders or wildlife viewers and is also part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Enjoy a walk through an old-growth bald cypress swamp with Cabbage Palmettos, ferns, bromeliads, orchids and other epiphytes on an elevated boardwalk. Some trees are believed to be over a thousand years old, including what is possibly the largest oak in Florida, with a girth of over 36 feet. Guests can also enjoy picnicking, ranger guided tours, a campground with full hookups, a playground, as well as “the Hammock Inn” restaurant.
